Alkylphenol ethoxylates （APEO）Testing

Alkylphenol ethoxylates are usually used as a wetting agent in textile processing. EU REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 limit nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPEO) emissions. For many years, the NPEO been used as detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents and dispersants; NP is used as a synthesis NPEO the media. NPEO and NP are highly toxic to aquatic life , water pollutants. They can destroy aquatic hormonal regulation system, resulting in the feminization effect. Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylates

Although theUShas not banned the use of detergents based on nonyl phenol ethoxylates (NPEO) and other similar "endocrine disrupting chemicals,” the European Union has, and many brand name leather product manufacturers and retailers have adopted this ban as part of their own specifications.

A draft Commission Regulation to amend Annex XVII to REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 as regards nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) was published. According to the draft Regulation, the new entry46ais proposed to be added. Nonylphenol ethoxylates, (C2H4O)nC15H24O, shall not be placed on the market from 60 months after the date of entry into force in textile articles which can reasonably be expected to be washed in water during their normal life cycle, in concentrations equal to or greater than 0.01% by weight of the textile article or each part of the textile article.

This shall not apply to the placing on the market of second-hand textile articles or to new textile articles produced exclusively from recycled textiles.

Note:“Textile article”means any unfinished, semi-finished or finished product which is composed of at least 80% textile fibres by weight, or any other product that contains a part which is composed of at least 80% textile fibres by weight.
