Flame retardant is a kind of special chemical auxiliaries used for improving the combustibility of the inflammable and easily ignited material, and widely used in fire retardant processing. After processing by fire retardants, the material can prevent, delay or end the spread of fire effectively when attacked by external fire cause, and thereby react on antiflaming.
Polymer will give rise to or spread fire on most occasions. Usually they are organic compound and can separate into unstable inflammable production when heated. The use of polymer is limited by its flammability. Now the wide usage of synthetic polymer has already increased the possibility of the occurrence of fire. The risk is closely related to everyone. Fire retardants must be added into polymer to meet the requirement for fire protection.
The efficiency of fire retardant contained haloid elements is best compared with other fire retardants, and PBDEs is widely used as fire retardant in family consumer goods. But PBDEs has toxicity to human liver, nerve, procreation, growth, and disturbs endocrine or has effects on thyroid hormones and sex hormones.
The European Court of Justice has made a judgement that it was invalid that the EU commission agreed that Deca-BDE is placed on the immunity list in 2002/95/EC—The Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS). The judgement was administered from 1st, July, 2008, and at the same time the immunity of Deca-BDE was canceled on 30th, June. Norwegian Government promulgated on 17th, January, 2008 that the prohibition from Deca-BDE would get into effect on 1st, April, 2008. Since Deca-BDE is widely used as fire retardants in textiles and plastic industry, the injunction has effects to textile and plastic industry all over the world.
